Essere or avere in the passato prossimo
Choose essere for many intransitive movements/state changes and all reflexive verbs; avere for most transitive actions.
Understand the choice
The two auxiliaries can appear in one event sequence. Arrivare describes the subject’s change of location and agrees; chiamare acts on an object and uses avere without subject agreement.
Core rule: Auxiliary choice is lexical: avere for most verbs and transitive actions; essere for reflexives and many intransitive changes of place/state, with subject agreement.
Notice it in context
Siamo arrivati e abbiamo subito chiamato l’albergo.
We arrived and immediately called the hotel.
Siamo…arrivati uses essere and plural agreement; abbiamo…chiamato uses avere and object albergo.
La bambina si è addormentata presto.
The girl fell asleep early.
Reflexive addormentarsi requires essere; participle agrees feminine singular.
I genitori hanno spento la luce.
The parents switched off the light.
Transitive spegnere uses avere and object luce.
What to remember
- Restare/rimanere use essere; camminare normally uses avere despite motion.
- With essere, participle endings are part of the grammar, not optional style.
Common trap: Do not choose essere for every physical activity. Learn the auxiliary with the verb.
