Nature and landscapes

Describe a path through woods, rivers, mountains, and coasts.

Understand the choice

Landscape nouns become memorable along a route. A sentiero can cross a bosco, follow a fiume, climb a montagna, and finish at a lago or spiaggia.

Core rule: Attraversare takes a direct object; arrivare a introduces an endpoint.

Notice it in context

Il sentiero attraversa il bosco e arriva a un lago tranquillo.

The path crosses the woods and reaches a quiet lake.

Sentiero is subject; bosco direct object; a un lago marks endpoint; tranquillo agrees with lago.

Dalla montagna vediamo il fiume e tutto il paesaggio.

From the mountain we see the river and entire landscape.

Montagna is viewpoint; fiume and paesaggio are visible objects.

Sull’isola c’è una lunga spiaggia.

On the island there is a long beach.

Isola is location; spiaggia is introduced by c’è.

What to remember

  • Bosco is a wooded area; foresta suggests a larger/dense forest.
  • Fiume flows to the sea; torrente is a stream or mountain river.

Common trap: Do not add a preposition after attraversare: attraversare il bosco.
