Fare in the passato prossimo
Use avere + fatto for completed actions and fixed activity phrases.
Understand the choice
Fare’s many noun combinations remain intact in the past: fare una passeggiata, fare la spesa, fare colazione, fare attenzione. Only the auxiliary changes by subject.
Core rule: Fare forms the passato prossimo with avere + irregular fatto.
Notice it in context
Abbiamo fatto una passeggiata dopo pranzo.
We took a walk after lunch.
Abbiamo carries noi; fatto is fixed; passeggiata completes the activity phrase.
Che cosa avete fatto ieri?
What did you do yesterday?
Avete begins the question and fatto remains participle.
Ho fatto la spesa prima di tornare.
I did the shopping before returning.
Fare la spesa stays together inside ho…fatto.
What to remember
- Fatto is also a noun meaning fact and an adjective meaning done.
- The participle has double t.
Common trap: Do not form facciuto. The irregular participle is fatto.
