Essere in the passato prossimo

Use avere + stato even though the main verb means to be.

Understand the choice

Unlike French but like other Italian movement/state verbs, essere uses itself as auxiliary. The auxiliary marks person and stato/stata/stati/state shows gender and number.

Core rule: Essere forms its passato prossimo with essere + stato, and stato agrees with the subject.

Notice it in context

Sono stata molto occupata questa settimana.

I have been very busy this week.

Sono is auxiliary; stata agrees with a feminine speaker; occupata also agrees with her.

Siamo stati pazienti con i bambini.

We were patient with the children.

Stati and pazienti mark masculine or mixed plural noi.

Dove siete state ieri?

Where were you yesterday?

State signals an all-feminine voi group.

What to remember

  • The imperfect ero is often used for background states.
  • Agreement is audible in stato/stata and visible throughout.

Common trap: Do not build ho stato. Use sono stato/a.
