Comparisons
Use più/meno…di or che and equality with (così/tanto)…come/quanto.
Understand the choice
Italian comparison depends on the structure being contrasted. Più di compares entities or amounts; più che often compares two properties of the same item. Irregular meglio/peggio are adverbs.
Core rule: Use di before a noun/pronoun comparison, che between two qualities/actions or preposition phrases, and come/quanto for equality.
Notice it in context
Il treno è più veloce dell’autobus, ma meno comodo.
The train is faster than the bus, but less comfortable.
Più veloce compares train and bus with di + article; meno comodo adds a second property.
Questa stanza è più luminosa che grande.
This room is brighter than it is large.
Che compares two adjectives of the same room.
Marta lavora tanto quanto Paolo.
Marta works as much as Paolo.
Tanto…quanto expresses equality of degree.
What to remember
- Migliore/peggiore are adjectives; meglio/peggio are adverbs.
- Di contracts with articles: del, della, degli.
Common trap: Do not use di automatically between two qualities: più pratico che elegante.
