The pronouns ci and ne
Use ci for a place or a + thing, and ne for di + thing or quantities.
Understand the choice
Ci and ne package a preposition with its complement. Preserve any number after ne, and recognize lexical phrases such as pensarci and averne bisogno.
Core rule: Ci replaces a place or a + non-person; ne replaces di + noun, partitives, or a noun after a quantity.
Notice it in context
Vai spesso in biblioteca? Sì, ci vado ogni settimana.
Do you often go to the library? Yes, I go there every week.
Ci replaces in biblioteca and stands before vado.
Hai bisogno del documento? Sì, ne ho bisogno.
Do you need the document? Yes, I need it.
Ne replaces del documento inside avere bisogno di.
Compro tre mele e ne mangio due.
I buy three apples and eat two of them.
Ne replaces mele; due preserves the quantity.
What to remember
- Ci can also mean us as a direct/indirect pronoun; context and verb distinguish it.
- Ne appears in andarsene, where it combines with reflexive structure.
Common trap: Do not drop the number after ne when quantity matters: ne mangio due.
