Andare in the passato prossimo

Use essere + andato and make the participle agree.

Understand the choice

Completed movement to a destination uses an essere auxiliary. Build sono/sei/è/siamo/siete/sono, then select andato, andata, andati, or andate from who moved.

Core rule: Andare uses essere in the passato prossimo and andato agrees with subject gender and number.

Notice it in context

Le mie sorelle sono andate al mercato stamattina.

My sisters went to the market this morning.

Sono agrees with plural sorelle; andate is feminine plural; al mercato gives destination.

Paolo è andato dal medico.

Paolo went to the doctor.

È is singular auxiliary; andato is masculine; dal gives destination.

Siamo andate a piedi fino al centro.

We walked to the center.

Andate marks an all-feminine noi; a piedi gives manner.

What to remember

  • A mixed-gender plural uses andati in traditional standard agreement.
  • The agreement ending is pronounced, unlike many French compound forms.

Common trap: Do not say abbiamo andato. Andare takes essere.
