Travel essentials

Combine destination, luggage, documents, booking, and accommodation.

Understand the choice

A short trip moves from ticket and document to luggage, destination, and room. Italian destination prepositions are lexical: a Firenze, in Italia, in Toscana.

Core rule: Use a for cities, in for most countries/regions, and in + accommodation for the place of stay.

Notice it in context

Andiamo a Firenze e dormiamo in un piccolo albergo.

We are going to Florence and staying in a small hotel.

A Firenze marks the city destination; in un albergo marks accommodation; piccolo agrees with albergo.

La valigia e il passaporto sono in camera.

The suitcase and passport are in the room.

Valigia and passaporto form a plural subject; in camera is conventional.

La prenotazione e il biglietto sono sul telefono.

The booking and ticket are on the phone.

Prenotazione, biglietto, and telefono link documents to storage.

What to remember

  • Albergo and hotel are both common; albergo is fully Italian.
  • Mappa is feminine despite ending in -a as expected; problema is a common masculine -a exception.

Common trap: Do not use in before a city: a Firenze, but in Italia.
