Noun plurals

Change final vowels while respecting gender and common spelling patterns.

Understand the choice

Plural formation is a coordinated change across article, noun, adjective, and verb. Begin with reliable patterns, then store irregulars such as uovo/uova and braccio/braccia separately.

Core rule: Most -o nouns form -i, most -a feminine nouns form -e, and most -e nouns form -i; articles change too.

Notice it in context

Il ragazzo legge due libri, e le ragazze scrivono tre lettere.

The boy reads two books, and the girls write three letters.

Libri shows -o→-i; ragazze shows -a→-e; plural subjects trigger scrivono.

Gli studenti aprono gli zaini.

The students open their backpacks.

Studente -e becomes studenti -i; zaino becomes zaini with gli.

Le città italiane hanno piazze belle.

Italian cities have beautiful squares.

Accented città is invariable; piazze follows -a→-e.

What to remember

  • Accented nouns and many foreign nouns are invariable: le città, i bar.
  • Nouns in -ca/-ga add h in the plural: amica/amiche.

Common trap: Do not pluralize only the noun; update article, adjective, and verb where required.
