Parlare: regular -are present

Use a stable stem and the core -are endings.

Understand the choice

Parlare is a model for thousands of verbs. Use parlare italiano for a language, parlare con for a partner, and parlare di for a topic. The ending often makes the pronoun unnecessary.

Core rule: Regular -are verbs take -o, -i, -a, -iamo, -ate, -ano in the present.

Notice it in context

Parlo italiano con i vicini e loro parlano inglese.

I speak Italian with the neighbors and they speak English.

Parlo identifies io without a pronoun; parlano identifies loro; con i vicini names partners.

Di che cosa parlate?

What are you talking about?

Parlate agrees with voi; di introduces the topic.

Marta parla con sua sorella ogni sera.

Marta speaks with her sister every evening.

Parla agrees with Marta; con gives the partner.

What to remember

  • Language names are normally lowercase: italiano, inglese.
  • Parlare a can mean address/speak to; parlare con emphasizes conversation.

Common trap: Do not retain the infinitive ending: io parlo, not io parlare.
