Telling time
Ask and answer with è for one o’clock and sono for all other hours.
Understand the choice
Italian time treats the hour as a plural subject except one o’clock. Quarter and half attach with e; meno counts down to the next hour. Keep clock time separate from duration.
Core rule: Use è l’una but sono le due/tre; event time uses a + article: all’una, alle tre.
Notice it in context
Sono le tre e un quarto, e la lezione comincia alle tre e mezza.
It is quarter past three, and the lesson begins at half past three.
Sono le tre states time; alle contracts a + le for the scheduled start; e mezza means half past.
Il treno parte a mezzogiorno in punto.
The train leaves at noon exactly.
A marks the event time and mezzogiorno needs no article here.
Aspettiamo da un’ora e dieci minuti.
We have been waiting for an hour and ten minutes.
Ora and minuti express duration after da.
What to remember
- Mezzogiorno is noon; mezzanotte is midnight.
- Sono le quattro meno dieci means 3:50.
Common trap: Do not say è le tre. Use plural sono le tre.
