Basic and articulated prepositions
Combine a, di, da, in, and su with definite articles when the noun requires one.
Understand the choice
Articulated prepositions are grammatical words, not optional contractions. Their ending preserves the article information: alla, degli, dai, nelle, sugli.
Core rule: A, di, da, in, and su combine with definite articles: al, del, dal, nel, sul and their gender/number variants; con and per usually stay separate.
Notice it in context
Vado al mercato con il pane del panificio.
I go to the market with bread from the bakery.
Al is a + il before mercato; del is di + il before panificio; con remains separate.
Il libro è sul tavolo vicino alla finestra.
The book is on the table near the window.
Sul and alla encode two article-preposition combinations.
Veniamo dai nostri amici e andiamo nel loro giardino.
We come from our friends and go into their garden.
Dai is da + i; nel is in + il.
What to remember
- Con can contract to col/coi, but separate con il/con i is neutral and common.
- Per does not normally articulate in modern standard Italian.
Common trap: Do not write a il or di il in ordinary standard prose. Use al and del.
