Common animals
Describe pets and other animals while learning articles and irregular plurals.
Understand the choice
Animal scenes make plurals and verb agreement memorable. Contrast il cane/i cani, la mucca/le mucche, and l’uccello/gli uccelli while describing behavior.
Core rule: Animal nouns carry grammatical gender; common plural patterns include -o→-i and -a→-e.
Notice it in context

The dog plays while the cat sleeps on the sofa.
Cane and gatto are subjects of separate clauses; mentre links simultaneous actions.
Il cavallo e la mucca sono nel prato.
The horse and cow are in the meadow.
Cavallo and mucca create a plural subject.
Un uccello vede un topo vicino al coniglio.
A bird sees a mouse near the rabbit.
Uccello is subject; topo object; coniglio landmark.
What to remember
- Mucca forms plural mucche to preserve the hard c sound.
- Pesce has plural pesci.
Common trap: Do not assume noun gender from an animal’s biological sex; gatto can be generic.
