Andare: present tense
Use vad- and and- forms for destinations and plans.
Understand the choice
Andare combines with a for cities and many destinations, in for countries/regions and many vehicles, and da for a person or professional. Its stems must be learned by subject.
Core rule: Andare uses vad-/va- in singular and third plural, but and- in noi and voi.
Notice it in context
Vado al mercato, mentre i miei amici vanno al parco.
I go to the market while my friends go to the park.
Vado is first-person singular; vanno is third plural; al contracts a + il for both destinations.
Andiamo in Italia in treno.
We are going to Italy by train.
Andiamo uses and-; in marks country and vehicle.
Vai dal medico domani?
Are you going to the doctor tomorrow?
Vai agrees with tu; dal contracts da + il.
What to remember
- Andare a + infinitive can express a literal movement to do something; imminent future is often present or stare per.
- Vado and vanno have double n only in vanno.
Common trap: Do not form io ando. The first person is vado.
