Sein in Konjunktiv II
Use wäre for unreal states, wishes, and tactful evaluation.
Understand the choice
Wäre is preferred to würde sein in careful German. It can mark a counterfactual condition, a wish, or interpersonal distance when evaluating a proposal.
Core rule: Sein has synthetic Konjunktiv II wäre, wärst, wäre, wären, wärt, wären.
Notice it in context
Es wäre sinnvoll, die Ergebnisse erneut zu prüfen.
It would be sensible to check the results again.
Wäre carries hypothetical distance; sinnvoll is the evaluation; the dependent action ends with zu prüfen.
Wenn ich an deiner Stelle wäre, würde ich warten.
If I were in your place, I would wait.
Wäre closes the condition; würde…warten gives the result.
Wären Sie morgen verfügbar?
Would you be available tomorrow?
Formal inversion with wären softens the availability question.
What to remember
- Wäre ich doch früher gekommen! uses wäre in an unreal past wish with participle/auxiliary structure.
- Wart is preterite ihr of sein; wärt with umlaut is hypothetical.
Common trap: Do not use würde sein when the compact standard form wäre is available.
