Information structure and emphasis

Use the first position, cleft-like frames, and passive choice to guide attention.

Understand the choice

Word order manages what readers treat as the starting point. Fronting an adjective, object, or long phrase creates emphasis; passive can keep a stable topic; nicht…sondern draws an explicit correction.

Core rule: German first position can host almost any single constituent; fronting marks the topic or contrast while the finite verb remains second.

Notice it in context

Entscheidend ist nicht der Preis, sondern die langfristige Wirkung.

What is decisive is not the price but the long-term effect.

Entscheidend is fronted and ist remains second; nicht…sondern contrasts Preis with Wirkung.

Diesen Vorschlag lehnt der Ausschuss ausdrücklich ab.

The committee explicitly rejects this proposal.

Fronted accusative Diesen Vorschlag is contrastive; lehnt is second and ab final.

Was wir brauchen, ist eine klare Entscheidung.

What we need is a clear decision.

A free relative clause forms the topic; ist links it to the focused noun phrase.

What to remember

  • Fronting does not change case: an accusative object remains accusative.
  • Overusing marked fronting can make prose dramatic or hard to follow.

Common trap: Do not move two independent constituents before the finite verb in a normal main clause.
