Advanced logical connectors
Express concession, restriction, cause, and result while respecting connector-specific word order.
Understand the choice
Advanced connectors do more than join ideas: they signal how much the writer concedes and whether a cause is primary, additional, or conditional. Their syntactic family still controls verb position.
Core rule: Zwar…aber/jedoch frames concession; sofern introduces a condition; zumal adds a supporting reason; folglich/deswegen introduce a result as adverbs.
Notice it in context
Zwar ist die Lösung teuer, sie bietet jedoch langfristige Vorteile.
The solution is expensive, but it offers long-term advantages.
Zwar occupies first position before ist; jedoch sits inside the second main clause without disturbing verb-second bietet.
Sofern alle zustimmen, kann der Plan umgesetzt werden.
Provided everyone agrees, the plan can be implemented.
Sofern subordinates and sends zustimmen final.
Die Nachfrage ist gesunken; folglich müssen wir die Produktion anpassen.
Demand has fallen; consequently we must adjust production.

What to remember
- Zwar announces a concession and normally expects aber, jedoch, or doch.
- Zumal introduces an additional reason often treated as already persuasive.
Common trap: Do not send the verb to the end after adverb folglich; it triggers ordinary verb-second inversion.
