Werden in the preterite
Describe a completed change with wurde and recognize the passive auxiliary.

Lexical werden marks change; the same finite forms also build a past passive when followed by a past participle. Learn to distinguish adjective complement from participle.
Core rule: Werden has the preterite stem wurd- and weak-looking endings: wurde, wurdest, wurde, wurden, wurdet, wurden.

Nach dem Gespräch wurde die Situation deutlich ruhiger.
After the conversation the situation became noticeably calmer.
Wurde is lexical become because ruhiger is a comparative adjective, not a participle.
Die Kinder wurden schnell müde.
The children quickly became tired.
Plural wurden links the subject to changing adjective müde.
Der Vertrag wurde gestern unterschrieben.
The contract was signed yesterday.
Wurde + participle unterschrieben forms a passive, not lexical becoming.
What to remember
- Wurde has no umlaut, unlike würde in Konjunktiv II.
- Geworden is the lexical participle; worden is used inside the perfect passive.
Common trap: Do not confuse wurde and würde: the first is real past, the second hypothetical/polite.
