Sein in the preterite
Use war- for past states and settings, especially in speech and writing.
Understand the choice
Although conversational German often prefers the perfect, sein is normally used in the preterite even in speech. It efficiently describes past identity, location, and conditions.
Core rule: Sein has the preterite forms war, warst, war, waren, wart, waren.
Notice it in context
Früher war das Viertel ruhiger, aber die Mieten waren niedriger.
The neighborhood used to be quieter, but rents were lower.
War agrees with singular Viertel; waren agrees with plural Mieten; comparatives create the before/now contrast.
Wo warst du gestern Abend?
Where were you yesterday evening?
Warst follows the question word and agrees with du.
Wir waren mit dem Ergebnis zufrieden.
We were satisfied with the result.
Waren agrees with wir; zufrieden mit takes dative.
What to remember
- Ihr wart is the shortest plural form and has no -e.
- Gewesen perfect remains possible when compound tense or emphasis is wanted.
Common trap: Do not build ich bin war. Preterite war is finite by itself.
