Können in the preterite

Express past ability with konnte and a final infinitive.

Understand the choice

Modal verbs commonly use preterite in spoken German. Konnte expresses an ability or possibility located in the past while the dependent action remains an infinitive at the end.

Core rule: Können loses its umlaut and uses the preterite stem konnt- plus weak endings.

Notice it in context

Wegen des Schnees konnten die Züge nicht weiterfahren.

Because of the snow, the trains could not continue.

Wegen des Schnees gives a genitive cause; konnten agrees with Züge; weiterfahren is final.

Ich konnte die Datei nicht öffnen.

I could not open the file.

Konnte is finite past; öffnen closes the modal bracket.

Konntet ihr den Weg ohne Karte finden?

Were you able to find the way without a map?

Konntet begins the ihr question; finden remains final.

What to remember

  • Konnte means could/was able; könnte is hypothetical could.
  • The spoken perfect with double infinitive is possible but more complex: ich habe kommen können.

Common trap: Do not add an umlaut to real past konnte. The umlaut belongs to hypothetical könnte.
