Haben in the preterite
Use hatte for past possession, age, and common states.
Understand the choice
Hatte is frequent in conversation because it is lighter than habe gehabt. It keeps German haben expressions intact for age, need, time, hunger, and fear.
Core rule: Haben forms its preterite with hatt- plus weak past endings.
Notice it in context
Als ich klein war, hatte ich große Angst vor Hunden.
When I was small, I was very afraid of dogs.
Hatte agrees with ich; Angst haben is the lexical expression; vor Hunden takes dative plural.
Wir hatten damals kein Auto.
We did not have a car then.
Hatten is plural past; kein negates the possessed noun.
Hattet ihr genug Zeit für die Aufgabe?
Did you have enough time for the task?
Hattet begins the question for ihr.
What to remember
- The double t belongs to every preterite form.
- Damals points to a past period; dann orders events.
Common trap: Do not say ich war Angst. The past of Angst haben is ich hatte Angst.
