Connector families and word order
Distinguish coordinating conjunctions, subordinators, and connective adverbs by verb position.
Understand the choice
Connectors express similar logic through different syntax. A learner who classifies the connector before speaking can predict whether the finite verb stays second, moves to the end, or follows an adverb in slot two.
Core rule: Und/aber/denn coordinate normal main clauses; weil/obwohl/dass subordinate with final verbs; deshalb/trotzdem are adverbs that occupy first position and trigger verb-second inversion.
Notice it in context
Obwohl es regnete, gingen wir spazieren; trotzdem wurden wir nicht nass.
Although it rained, we went for a walk; nevertheless we did not get wet.
Obwohl sends regnete final; gingen is second after the subordinate clause; trotzdem occupies first position before wurden.
Ich bleibe zu Hause, denn ich bin krank.
I am staying home because I am ill.
Denn coordinates, so ich bin keeps main-clause order.
Ich bin krank; deshalb bleibe ich zu Hause.
I am ill; therefore I am staying home.
Deshalb fills first position, so bleibe precedes ich.
What to remember
- A whole initial subordinate clause occupies first position of the following main clause.
- Weil with verb-second occurs colloquially but is not the target in standard learning contexts.
Common trap: Do not apply one word order to all words meaning because/although/therefore.
