At a restaurant

Reserve, order, handle a dietary request, and ask for the bill.

Understand the choice

Restaurant German uses compact service formulas. Distinguish die Speisekarte from a fixed Menü, name courses precisely, and keep Rechnung separate from Quittung.

Core rule: Hätten gern is a polite request; für takes accusative and restaurant objects follow directly.

Notice it in context

Wir hätten gern einen Tisch für zwei und später die Rechnung.

We would like a table for two and later the bill.

Hätten gern softens the request; einen Tisch is masculine accusative; für zwei gives party size.

Als Vorspeise nehme ich die Suppe und als Hauptgericht den Fisch.

For a starter I will have the soup and fish as the main course.

Vorspeise and Hauptgericht label courses; nehmen is idiomatic for ordering.

Die Beilage fehlt; ich frage den Kellner.

The side dish is missing; I ask the waiter.

Beilage is subject of fehlt; Kellner is masculine accusative.

What to remember

  • Die Rechnung is the amount to pay; die Quittung proves payment afterward.
  • Trinkgeld literally means drink money and refers to a tip.

Common trap: Do not ask for die Karte if you mean the bill; die Karte is the menu or payment card.
