Haben in the perfect
Combine present haben with gehabt to describe completed possession or states.
Understand the choice
The surface repetition is grammatical: the first haben marks subject and compound tense, while gehabt carries the meaning had. It appears with possession and fixed haben expressions.
Core rule: The perfect of haben is present haben + gehabt; the participle goes to the clause end.
Notice it in context
Wir haben großes Glück gehabt.
We were very lucky.
Haben is the auxiliary; gehabt closes the clause; Glück haben remains the lexical expression.
Sie hat gestern keine Zeit gehabt.
She had no time yesterday.
Hat is the auxiliary; keine Zeit is inside the bracket; gehabt is final.
Habt ihr Hunger gehabt?
Were you hungry?
Habt begins the question and gehabt closes it.
What to remember
- Simple hatte is often preferred for ordinary past possession.
- The participle gehabt begins with ge- and ends -t.
Common trap: Do not omit the auxiliary: wir großes Glück gehabt is not a complete standard main clause.
