Gehen in the perfect
Use sein + gegangen for completed movement from one place to another.
Understand the choice
Many intransitive changes of place use sein in the perfect. The auxiliary occupies the finite slot, while route, manner, and time can fill the middle before gegangen.
Core rule: Gehen forms the perfect with sein + the irregular participle gegangen.
Notice it in context
Nach dem Essen sind wir zu Fuß nach Hause gegangen.
After the meal we walked home.
Sind agrees with wir; zu Fuß and nach Hause describe manner and destination; gegangen is final.
Wann bist du ins Büro gegangen?
When did you go into the office?
Bist follows wann; ins marks destination; gegangen closes.
Die Gäste sind früh gegangen.
The guests left early.
Plural Gäste selects sind; früh modifies the completed departure.
What to remember
- Gehen can mean leave in context: die Gäste sind gegangen.
- Ins contracts in das and marks movement into a neuter place.
Common trap: Do not use haben with ordinary movement gehen: ich bin gegangen.
