Feelings and reactions

Distinguish a state, a cause, and becoming emotional.

Understand the choice

Emotion words become precise when paired with the right preposition. Stolz auf, enttäuscht von/über, Angst vor, and wütend auf identify the target or cause rather than leaving the feeling vague.

Core rule: Predicate adjectives after sein/bleiben/werden take no ending; wegen introduces a cause.

Notice it in context

Ich bin wegen der Prüfung nervös, aber meine Freundin bleibt ruhig.

I am nervous because of the exam, but my friend stays calm.

Nervös follows bin unchanged; wegen der Prüfung gives cause; ruhig follows bleibt unchanged.

Sie ist stolz auf ihre Arbeit und glücklich über das Ergebnis.

She is proud of her work and happy about the result.

Stolz and glücklich combine with different prepositional complements.

Die Nachricht hat uns überrascht und wütend gemacht.

The news surprised us and made us angry.

Überrascht and wütend describe two reactions to Nachricht.

What to remember

  • Sich freuen auf looks forward to something; sich freuen über reacts to something present or received.
  • Bekommen means receive, not become; become is werden.

Common trap: Do not translate “I become angry” with ich bekomme wütend. Say ich werde wütend.
