Dürfen: present tense
Express permission and prohibition with darf- in the singular.
Understand the choice
Permission and necessity must stay distinct. Dürfen asks whether an action is allowed; its negative expresses prohibition, while nicht müssen expresses lack of necessity.
Core rule: Dürfen uses darf- without umlaut in singular; nicht dürfen means must not / be prohibited.

Hier dürfen Kinder spielen, aber sie dürfen nicht auf die Straße laufen.
Children may play here, but they must not run into the street.
Dürfen agrees with plural Kinder; both infinitives spielen and laufen close their modal clauses.
