Basic adjective endings
Let the article show how much case/gender information the adjective must carry.
Understand the choice
Adjective endings distribute grammatical information across article and adjective. Begin with high-frequency frames rather than the entire table: ein guter Film, eine gute Idee, einen guten Film, der gute Film.
Core rule: After ein-words, adjectives show gender where the article ending is absent and use -en in many other positions; after definite articles, -e/-en dominate.
Notice it in context
Ich kaufe einen warmen Mantel und eine warme Mütze.
I am buying a warm coat and a warm cap.
Einen already marks masculine accusative, so warmen takes -en; eine warme displays feminine -e.
Das ist ein kleines Hotel.
That is a small hotel.
Neuter ein has no visible ending, so kleines carries -es.
Wir wohnen in dem alten Haus.
We live in the old house.
Definite dative dem is followed by weak -en on alten.
What to remember
- Predicate adjectives have no ending: der Mantel ist warm.
- Plural adjectives after die normally take -en: die warmen Jacken.
Common trap: Do not add an ending after sein: eine warme Jacke, but die Jacke ist warm.
