Travel essentials

Combine destination, luggage, reservation, and accommodation.

Understand the choice

A compact travel sequence starts with booking, continues through documents and luggage, and ends at accommodation. Keep destination phrases separate from static lodging phrases.

Core rule: Use nach for most city and country destinations without an article; use in + dative for the place where you stay.

Notice it in context

Wir fahren nach Berlin und übernachten in einem kleinen Hotel.

We are traveling to Berlin and staying in a small hotel.

Nach Berlin gives the destination; in einem kleinen Hotel describes the fixed lodging place.

Mein Koffer und mein Pass liegen im Zimmer.

My suitcase and passport are in the room.

Koffer and Pass are travel items; im Zimmer marks location.

Die Reservierung und das Ticket sind auf meinem Handy.

The reservation and ticket are on my phone.

Both documents form a plural subject; auf + dative marks storage.

What to remember

  • Say in die Schweiz because the country name has an article, but nach Deutschland.
  • Übernachten means stay overnight; wohnen usually suggests residence.

Common trap: Do not use zu Berlin for ordinary travel to the city. Use nach Berlin.
