Sprechen: present tense
Apply the e→i change when speaking with or about someone.
Understand the choice
Sprechen can name a language directly or take mit + dative for a conversation partner and über + accusative for a topic. Its singular vowel change matches the pattern in essen.
Core rule: Sprechen changes e to i in du sprichst and er/sie/es spricht.
Notice it in context
Er spricht Deutsch, und wir sprechen ein wenig Spanisch.
He speaks German, and we speak a little Spanish.
Spricht agrees with er; sprechen agrees with wir; language nouns need no article here.
Sprichst du mit deiner Nachbarin?
Are you speaking with your neighbor?
Sprichst shows the du change; mit requires dative.
Ihr sprecht über den neuen Kurs.
You are talking about the new course.
Sprecht keeps e; über takes accusative for the topic.
What to remember
- Deutsch and Spanisch are capitalized as language nouns.
- Mit jemandem sprechen means speak with someone; jemanden sprechen can mean reach or consult them.
Common trap: Do not add the vowel change to ihr: ihr sprecht, not ihr spricht.
