Rooms at home
Locate household activities with in + dative for a fixed place.
Understand the choice
Room names combine productively with activity verbs. The case tells whether someone is already in the room or moving into it; this lesson keeps the focus on fixed locations.
Core rule: Use in + dative for location: in der Küche, im Schlafzimmer, im Garten.
Notice it in context
Wir essen in der Küche und schlafen im Schlafzimmer.
We eat in the kitchen and sleep in the bedroom.
In der marks feminine Küche; im contracts in dem before neuter Schlafzimmer.
Der Schreibtisch steht im Wohnzimmer.
The desk is in the living room.
Steht indicates a fixed location and triggers im.
Die Fahrräder sind im Keller neben dem Garten.
The bicycles are in the basement next to the garden.
Keller and Garten both appear in dative place phrases.
What to remember
- Im is the contraction of in dem.
- Zimmer is neuter; compounds ending in -zimmer inherit das.
Common trap: Do not use accusative for every in phrase. No movement means dative.
