Nicht and kein
Use kein for an absent indefinite noun and nicht for verbs, adjectives, or specific phrases.
Understand the choice
German splits English not/no across two systems. If the positive phrase would use ein/eine or no article, kein is often available. Otherwise place nicht according to what is being denied or contrasted.
Core rule: Kein declines like ein and negates an indefinite or articleless noun; nicht negates a verb, adjective, definite noun phrase, or another element.
Notice it in context
Ich habe kein Auto, aber ich fahre heute nicht mit dem Bus.
I do not have a car, but I am not taking the bus today.
Kein replaces ein before neuter Auto; nicht negates the travel choice mit dem Bus.
Sie trinkt keinen Kaffee.
She does not drink coffee.
Articleless Kaffee becomes masculine accusative keinen Kaffee.
Das Zimmer ist nicht groß.
The room is not large.
Nicht negates the predicate adjective groß.
What to remember
- Plural kein has forms such as keine Bücher and keinen Büchern.
- Nicht often stands late in a clause, but it comes directly before a specifically contrasted element.
Common trap: Do not use nicht ein Auto for neutral “no car.” Say kein Auto.
