Kitchen basics
Name tools and furniture by learning each noun with its article.
Understand the choice
Kitchen words become usable when they are attached to places and actions: a Topf stands on the Herd, a Messer lies on the Tisch, and food goes into the Kühlschrank.
Core rule: German nouns are capitalized; location after auf uses dative when no movement is involved.
Notice it in context
Der Topf steht auf dem Herd, und das Messer liegt auf dem Tisch.
The pot is on the stove, and the knife is on the table.
Steht and liegt describe position; auf dem marks a fixed location.
Die Pfanne ist neben dem Topf.
The pan is next to the pot.
Pfanne and Topf both appear with their noun gender visible.
Ich stelle die Tasse in den Kühlschrank.
I put the cup into the refrigerator.
Movement into a destination selects accusative den Kühlschrank.
What to remember
- Learn der Topf, die Pfanne, das Messer as article-noun units.
- Stehen is typical for upright objects; liegen for flat or horizontal ones.
Common trap: Do not write common nouns with lowercase letters in standard German.
