Everyday food

Use essen with common meals and foods, keeping noun gender visible.

Understand the choice

Food vocabulary sticks when it is organized into meals rather than a loose list. Use zum Frühstück, zum Mittagessen, and zum Abendessen as anchors for what someone eats.

Core rule: A time phrase may occupy first position, so the conjugated verb still comes second.

Notice it in context

Zum Frühstück esse ich Brot mit Käse.

For breakfast I eat bread with cheese.

Zum Frühstück fills first position; esse remains second and subject ich follows it.

Wir essen Fisch mit Reis und Gemüse.

We eat fish with rice and vegetables.

Three food nouns follow essen; mit links the side dishes.

Ein Ei und etwas Obst reichen mir.

An egg and some fruit are enough for me.

Ei and Obst form a compound subject; etwas marks an uncounted amount.

What to remember

  • Obst and Gemüse are usually mass or collective nouns, not ordinary plurals.
  • Brot can mean bread generally or a slice/open sandwich in some contexts.

Common trap: Do not force an article before every food when speaking generally: ich esse gern Käse.
