Fahren: present tense
Handle the a→ä change in du and er/sie/es while keeping plural forms stable.
Understand the choice
Fahren covers riding, driving, and vehicle travel; context or a mit phrase identifies the vehicle. Its vowel change is limited to the two stressed singular forms.
Core rule: Fahren changes a to ä only in du fährst and er/sie/es fährt.
Notice it in context
Du fährst mit dem Fahrrad, aber ich fahre mit dem Bus.
You ride a bicycle, but I travel by bus.
Fährst shows the du change; fahre keeps a for ich; both vehicles follow mit + dative.
Sie fährt jeden Morgen zur Universität.
She travels to university every morning.
Fährt is third-person singular; zur gives the destination.
Fahrt ihr am Wochenende ans Meer?
Are you traveling to the sea at the weekend?
Ihr uses unchanged fahrt; ans contracts an das.
What to remember
- Fahrrad fahren can appear without mit; mit dem Fahrrad fahren is also standard.
- Fahren may be transitive: ich fahre das Auto means I drive the car.
Common trap: Do not add the umlaut to wir or ihr: wir fahren, ihr fahrt.
