Drinks and ordering
Ask for water, coffee, or tea with a polite quantity phrase.
Understand the choice
A useful drink order combines a courteous verb, a container or drink noun, and bitte. Gender becomes visible in einen Tee, einen Kaffee, eine Flasche, and ein Glas.
Core rule: Möchte + accusative noun makes a polite order; masculine ein becomes einen.
Notice it in context
Ich möchte einen Tee und ein Glas Wasser, bitte.
I would like a tea and a glass of water, please.
Einen marks masculine Tee as the direct object; ein marks neuter Glas.
Sie trinkt Kaffee mit Milch.
She drinks coffee with milk.
Kaffee is the direct object; mit Milch names the addition.
Wir kaufen eine Flasche Saft.
We buy a bottle of juice.
Eine agrees with feminine Flasche; Saft completes the container phrase.
What to remember
- In Germany, ein Wasser is common shorthand for one serving of water.
- Saftschorle is juice mixed with sparkling water.
Common trap: Do not say ich will in a polite café order unless the direct tone is intentional.
