Colors
Learn color words through objects whose article and adjective stay visible.
Understand the choice
German color words are easiest to recall in complete descriptions. Pair each color with a familiar noun, and notice that predicate adjectives after ist or sind remain unchanged.
Core rule: After sein, a color adjective has no case ending.
Notice it in context
Das Auto ist blau, und das Fahrrad ist rot.
The car is blue, and the bicycle is red.
Both blau and rot follow ist, so neither receives an adjective ending.
Die Jacke ist schwarz und weiß.
The jacket is black and white.
Schwarz and weiß coordinate as two unchanged predicate adjectives.
Meine Augen sind grün.
My eyes are green.
Plural Augen selects sind; grün remains unchanged.
What to remember
- Weiß contains ß; in Swiss Standard German it is written weiss.
- Hellblau and dunkelgrün combine light/dark directly with a color.
Common trap: Do not add an English-style plural ending: die Autos sind rot, not roten.
