Classroom language

Follow simple instructions and ask when you do not understand.

Understand the choice

Classroom vocabulary works through instructions: open a book, write a sentence, read a word, ask a question, and give an answer. Commands reveal who is being addressed.

Core rule: The ihr imperative usually removes the subject pronoun but keeps the present ihr verb form.

Notice it in context

Bitte öffnet das Buch und schreibt den Satz in euer Heft.

Please open the book and write the sentence in your notebook.

Öffnet and schreibt are ihr commands; Buch and Satz are direct objects; euer Heft names the destination.

Ich verstehe das Wort nicht und stelle eine Frage.

I do not understand the word and ask a question.

Wort is negated with nicht at the clause end; Frage follows stellen.

Die Antwort steht an der Tafel.

The answer is written on the board.

Antwort is the subject; an der Tafel is a fixed location.

What to remember

  • Eine Frage stellen is the standard collocation for ask a question.
  • Tafel can be a board, tablet, or bar of chocolate depending on context.

Common trap: Do not keep ihr in a normal command: schreibt den Satz, not ihr schreibt den Satz.
