Core subjunctive triggers

Recognize necessity, will, emotion, doubt, and concession before choosing the mood.

Understand the choice

Mood follows the speaker’s framing, not a simple true/false test. Il faut que imposes necessity, vouloir que projects will, être ravi que evaluates emotionally, douter que withholds commitment, and bien que concedes.

Core rule: Use the subjunctive after many expressions of necessity, will, emotion, doubt, possibility, and concession when they introduce que + subject + verb.

Notice it in context

Il est essentiel que chacun puisse exprimer son avis.

It is essential that everyone be able to express their opinion.

Il est essentiel que is the trigger; chacun is the subordinate subject; puisse is subjunctive pouvoir.

Je souhaite que vous répondiez avant lundi.

I would like you to reply before Monday.

Souhaiter que with a separate subject triggers répondiez.

Bien qu’il soit tard, la discussion continue.

Although it is late, the discussion continues.

Bien que takes subjunctive soit despite treating lateness as real.

What to remember

  • When the subject stays the same, an infinitive often replaces que: je veux partir.
  • Espérer que normally takes the indicative in affirmative standard French.

Common trap: Do not select the subjunctive merely because que appears. The main expression must license or require it.
