The past conditional
Describe an unreal past result, regret, or unconfirmed report with conditional avoir/être plus participle.
Understand the choice
The past conditional looks backward at an outcome that did not occur or is not fully confirmed. The auxiliary carries conditional distance, while the participle retains the compound-tense agreement rules.
Core rule: Form the past conditional with conditional avoir or être + past participle; in an unreal si sentence pair it with si + plus-que-parfait.
Notice it in context
Avec plus de temps, nous aurions choisi une autre solution.
With more time, we would have chosen another solution.
Aurions is conditional avoir; choisi is the past participle; avec plus de temps supplies the unreal condition.
Si elle avait vu le message, elle serait venue.
If she had seen the message, she would have come.
Plus-que-parfait condition pairs with past-conditional result; venue agrees with elle.
Le ministre aurait annoncé sa démission.
The minister has reportedly announced his resignation.
Journalistic conditional presents information as unconfirmed.
What to remember
- Never put a conditional directly after si in the standard unreal pattern.
- The reported-information conditional does not necessarily imply the event is false, only not confirmed by the speaker.
Common trap: Do not write si elle aurait vu. Use si elle avait vu, then elle serait venue.
