Debate and evidence

State a position, qualify it, counter an objection, and demand support.

Understand the choice

A strong discussion separates claims from evidence and disagreement from dismissal. Name the central enjeu, test the hypothesis, identify possible bias, and reformulate the opposing point of view before responding.

Core rule: Avancer un argument, fournir une preuve, soulever une objection, nuancer une position, and tenir compte d’un biais are debate collocations.

Notice it in context

Cet argument semble convaincant, mais il repose sur une hypothèse fragile.

This argument seems convincing, but it rests on a weak assumption.

Argument is evaluated by convaincant; repose sur exposes the supporting hypothèse; fragile qualifies its weakness.

Cette preuve répond à l’objection principale.

This evidence answers the main objection.

Preuve supplies support; objection names the counterpoint.

Pour nuancer ce point de vue, il faut examiner les biais.

To qualify this viewpoint, we must examine the biases.

Nuancer and point de vue frame qualification; biais identifies distortions.

What to remember

  • Un argument in French is a reason in a debate, not a quarrel; une dispute is a quarrel.
  • Enjeu names what is at stake, not simply a topic such as sujet.

Common trap: Do not call an unsupported assertion une preuve. A proof or piece of evidence must support the claim independently.
