Vouloir in the present conditional

Make requests and wishes more tactful with voudr-.

Understand the choice

Je voudrais is not merely a memorized restaurant phrase. The conditional creates distance from a direct demand, while the complement specifies the desired object or change. The same forms also express hypothetical wishes.

Core rule: Vouloir uses the conditional stem voudr- plus imparfait endings and is normally followed by a noun or infinitive.

Notice it in context

Je voudrais modifier ma réservation, s’il vous plaît.

I would like to change my booking, please.

Voudrais softens the first-person request; modifier remains infinitive.

Voudriez-vous patienter quelques minutes ?

Would you wait a few minutes?

Conditional inversion creates a formal courteous request.

Nous voudrions une chambre plus calme.

We would like a quieter room.

The conditional is followed directly by the requested noun phrase.

What to remember

  • Je veux is grammatically correct but can sound blunt in service encounters.
  • The stem voudr- is shared by all six forms; only the imperfect-style ending changes.

Common trap: Do not add de before the infinitive: je voudrais modifier, not je voudrais de modifier.
