Relationships and social support

Describe trust, disagreement, compromise, and dependable support.

Understand the choice

Relationship language improves when it names the interaction rather than judging the person. A désaccord can become a conflit, or lead through écoute and respect to a compromis and better entente.

Core rule: Avoir confiance en, compter sur, être en désaccord, and parvenir à un compromis express relationship dynamics.

Notice it in context

Même après notre désaccord, nous avons trouvé un compromis.

Even after our disagreement, we found a compromise.

Même après concedes the difficulty; trouver un compromis describes the resolution.

Je peux compter sur son soutien.

I can count on her support.

Compter sur is the fixed expression; soutien names dependable help.

La confiance renforce le lien entre les deux collègues.

Trust strengthens the bond between the two colleagues.

Confiance and lien describe the quality and result of the relationship.

What to remember

  • Avoir confiance en quelqu’un means trust someone; faire confiance à quelqu’un is an alternative construction.
  • Entente can mean mutual understanding or an agreement, depending on context.

Common trap: Do not translate support a person with supporter: supporter often means tolerate. Use soutenir quelqu’un.
