Public services and paperwork

Navigate appointments, forms, proof, deadlines, and official requests.

Understand the choice

Administrative French is dense because a dossier contains several documents and a démarche may contain several steps. Reading the action verbs reveals what must be completed, attached, submitted, renewed, or collected.

Core rule: Effectuer une démarche, remplir un formulaire, joindre un justificatif, déposer un dossier, and respecter un délai form an administrative sequence.

Notice it in context

Pour renouveler le document, il faut joindre un justificatif au formulaire.

To renew the document, you must attach supporting evidence to the form.

Pour + infinitive states purpose; joindre takes justificatif directly and au formulaire marks attachment.

J’ai pris rendez-vous au guichet pour déposer mon dossier.

I made an appointment at the counter to submit my application file.

Rendez-vous, guichet, and dossier name three stages of the visit.

Le délai de renouvellement est indiqué sur le formulaire.

The renewal deadline is shown on the form.

Délai gives the allowed time; renouvellement specifies the procedure.

What to remember

  • Un dossier is both a physical folder and the complete set of papers for an application.
  • Justificatif is evidence such as proof of address, income, or identity, not a written excuse by default.

Common trap: Do not confuse délai with retard. Délai is an allowed period or deadline; retard is lateness.
