Conditional for tact and distance
Use conditional forms to soften a request, suggestion, or disagreement.
Understand the choice
Politeness is not a separate vocabulary list; it is a grammatical choice about interpersonal distance. The conditional makes space for refusal or negotiation, especially with formal vous and service encounters.
Core rule: Conditional pouvoir, vouloir, aimer, and devoir create distance from a direct command or assertion.

Pourriez-vous m’envoyer une copie avant jeudi ?
Could you send me a copy before Thursday?
Pourriez-vous uses conditional inversion; m’ is the recipient; envoyer remains infinitive.
J’aimerais proposer une autre solution.
I would like to suggest another solution.
Aimerais frames the proposal as tactful preference.
Vous devriez peut-être vérifier l’adresse.
Perhaps you should check the address.
Conditional devriez plus peut-être makes the advice less abrupt.
What to remember
- S’il vous plaît adds courtesy but does not by itself soften a strongly direct structure.
- The imperfect-style endings distinguish conditional from future in writing: pourriez versus pourrez.
Common trap: Do not stack unnecessary markers such as est-ce que pourriez-vous. Use pourriez-vous…? or est-ce que vous pourriez…?
