Aller in the future simple
Use the irregular ir- stem for future destinations and developments.
Understand the choice
The future simple treats the plan as a future fact or prediction. Aller is unusually short: do not attach future endings to all-. Contrast j’irai, future simple, with je vais aller, near future.
Core rule: Aller uses the irregular future stem ir- plus -ai, -as, -a, -ons, -ez, -ont.
Notice it in context
L’année prochaine, nous irons vivre à Strasbourg.
Next year, we will go and live in Strasbourg.
Irons carries both ir- and the nous future ending; l’année prochaine anchors it ahead.
Tu iras directement chez le client.
You will go directly to the client’s office.
Iras is future; chez locates the visit with a person or business.
Ils n’iront pas à la cérémonie.
They will not go to the ceremony.
Ne…pas surrounds the future form iront.
What to remember
- J’irai has no double r; je verrai and je pourrai do.
- The near future often conveys an immediate plan; future simple is frequent in formal predictions and future clauses.
Common trap: Do not form j’allerai or j’allerai. The future stem is ir-: j’irai.
