Checking into a hotel
Confirm a booking and solve common room problems at reception.
Understand the choice
A hotel exchange needs four compact frames: j’ai une réservation, au nom de…, à quelle heure…, and il manque…. These cover arrival, identification, schedules, and missing items without elaborate grammar.
Core rule: Au nom de identifies the booking name; avoir une réservation and réserver une chambre describe the result and action.
Notice it in context
J’ai une réservation au nom de Camille Martin.
I have a reservation under the name Camille Martin.
Au contracts à + le inside au nom de; the full name follows without an article.
À quelle heure est servi le petit-déjeuner ?
What time is breakfast served?
À quelle heure asks for a schedule; the passive participle agrees with masculine petit-déjeuner.
Il n’y a pas de serviettes dans la chambre.
There are no towels in the room.
After the negative il n’y a pas, des becomes de.
What to remember
- Client or cliente is natural for a hotel guest; hôte can mean host or guest and needs context.
- Clé is the standard spelling; clef is an accepted traditional variant.
Common trap: Do not translate “in the name of” with dans le nom de. Bookings use au nom de.
