Vendre: regular -re present
Use one clear model for regular verbs ending in -re.
Understand the choice
Vendre supplies the basic -re pattern and helps with attendre, entendre, perdre, and répondre. Singular forms sound alike, while nous and vous make the endings audible.
Core rule: Regular vendre-type -re endings are -s, -s, no ending, -ons, -ez, -ent after removing -re.
Notice it in context
Je vends des livres et nous vendons aussi des journaux.
I sell books and we also sell newspapers.
Vends and vendons contrast singular and plural subjects; des introduces unspecified plural goods.
Tu vends ta vieille voiture ?
Are you selling your old car?
Vends is the tu form; vieille agrees with feminine voiture.
Cette boutique vend du pain.
This shop sells bread.
Vend is third-person singular and has no added ending after the stem.
What to remember
- The final d of vend is normally silent; the infinitive vendre pronounces the /dʁ/ cluster.
- Répondre resembles vendre but keeps its own stem spelling before endings.
Common trap: Do not add -t to the third-person form: il vend, not il vendt.
