Classroom essentials

Follow instructions and name the tools used to learn.

Understand the choice

Connect each classroom object to its normal action: ouvrir un livre, écrire dans un cahier, répondre à une question, and faire ses devoirs. These chunks prevent literal preposition errors.

Core rule: Affirmative tu commands often use the present tu form without the final written -s for regular -er verbs; écrire keeps its irregular form écris.

Notice it in context

Ouvre le livre et écris la réponse au crayon.

Open the book and write the answer in pencil.

Ouvre and écris are two tu commands; au crayon means using pencil as the writing medium.

La professeure écrit au tableau.

The teacher writes on the board.

Au contracts à + le and marks the writing surface.

Quelle est la réponse à la question ?

What is the answer to the question?

Réponse takes à before the question it answers.

What to remember

  • Devoirs is normally plural for homework: faire ses devoirs.
  • Professeur works for any gender; professeure is also standard and common in many regions.

Common trap: Do not translate “with a pencil” mechanically as avec un crayon in this context. French normally says écrire au crayon.
